Your “Alpharetta” Address May Be in Milton, Johns Creek or Forsyth County

The short answer

Often not. The post office uses “Alpharetta” for ZIP codes that cross into the cities of Milton and Johns Creek and into unincorporated Forsyth County. The address does not decide your city, your county or your school district; the parcel does. Check the tax district on the county’s own map before you compare taxes or schools between two listings.

Two listings can both say “Alpharetta, GA” and still answer to different city halls, county commissions and school boards. That is not an error in the listing. Mailing addresses follow delivery routes; city and county lines follow law.

Fulton County Schools’ address records give “Alpharetta” as the mailing city for addresses in ZIP codes 30004, 30005, 30009 and 30022, including addresses inside Milton, Johns Creek and Roswell. (Fulton County Schools GIS: Basemap/AddressPoints FeatureServer layer 0 (fields Zip, City, PrefCity), checked 2026-10-19)

Census ZIP area 30004 overlaps the cities of Milton, Alpharetta and Roswell plus unincorporated land, and spans Fulton, Forsyth and Cherokee counties; by land area it is about 61% Milton and 7% Alpharetta. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020 ZCTA-to-Place and ZCTA-to-County relationship files, checked 2026-10-19)

What changes when the line moves

The city share of the tax bill, the homestead exemptions, the zoning code, who issues permits, who answers a code complaint and, on the Forsyth side, the school district. At the same value the yearly tax differs from one jurisdiction to the next:
